Shortly after receiving their AS9100 certification, VX Aerospace was awarded a contract through L3 Communications, to reverse engineer and manufacture composite parts for helicopters based at the Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, NC. In many cases, the current helicopter parts are made of aluminum, and VX Aerospace will reverse engineer these parts and replace them with form, fit and function composite parts. The military receives stronger, stiffer, non-corrosive composite parts, which will also cost less than repairing the existing metal parts. We eliminate the high-cost aluminum repairable parts, and replace them with low-cost composite consumable parts, said Raymond Jones, Chief Executive Officer. In essence, the military receives a better product at a lower cost. We are proud to be providing such benefits to the war fighters in Iraq and Afghanistan, adds Jones. AS9100 certification was a key component to receiving the contract, said Robert Skillen, Chief Engineer.
We had already shown the new composite parts would fit; what the customer needed was assurance we could deliver. The AS9100 certification gave us that credibility, said Skillen.
